Our Methods

We use something called Shared Inquiry — which is just a fancy way of saying we explore the book together through great questions. We take turns, listen closely, and let new ideas emerge as we go.

Northwest Great Books isn't about telling you what a book means — we discover it together.

Questions lead the way, and everyone brings something valuable to the table.

If a book club and a great conversation had a baby… it would be Shared Inquiry. But of course there are a few guidelines:

Guidelines for Shared Inquiry™  Discussion

How we keep the conversation lively, thoughtful, and welcoming for everyone.

  1. Read the book.
So we all have something to explore together.
  2. Use the text.
When you share an idea, show us where you found it — a moment, a line, a passage.
  3. Ask questions that spark curiosity.
We follow questions that help us think more deeply, not trivia or spoilers.
  4. Listen to understand.
Everyone brings a unique perspective — let’s make space for all voices.
  5. One person at a time.
Jumping in is great — interrupting, not so much.
  6. Stay open to new ideas.
We’re discovering meaning together. You might leave with a different viewpoint than you came with — that’s part of the fun!
  7. No right or wrong answers.
We explore possibilities. Insight happens when ideas meet.
