61st Northwest Great Books Weekend
June 26 – 27, 2021
Please join other book lovers as we challenge these authors’ ideas and maybe learn more about ourselves.
- No-No Boy by John Okada, ISBN 9780295994048, a 1947 Asian-American novel of a Japanese-American man returning to Seattle after doing time in prison for not joining the army. We will explore themes of isolation, identity, and patriotism.
- The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, ISBN 9780679744726, two essays that galvanized readers in the Civil Rights era. This is a disturbing examination of the consequences of religion and racial injustice.
- Sweat by Lynn Nottage, ISBN 9781559365321, the 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama of a group of women factory workers and the forces that divide friends.
- A Game of Chess by Stefan Zweig, ISBN 9781847495815, the encounter between a Grand Master and the survivor of psychological torture by the Nazis.
We will have two discussions on Saturday, followed by a Virtual Social Gathering hosted by Cindy Bouldin, then conclude with two discussions on Sunday.
