Whether you are new to Northwest Great Books, or a seasoned participant, we’ve created an exciting list of short-ish books that is sure to stimulate great conversations. Please join other book lovers as we challenge these authors’ ideas and maybe learn more about ourselves.
Saturday June 26th
- A Game of Chess by Stefan Zweig, ISBN 9781847495815, the encounter between a Grand Master and the survivor of psychological torture by the Nazis. 10:00 – 11:30am
- Sweat by Lynn Nottage, ISBN 9781559365321, the 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama of a group of women factory workers and the forces that divide friends. 1:30-3:00pm
- Happy Hour 3:00 – 5:00pm
Sunday June 27th
- The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, ISBN 9780679744726, two essays that galvanized readers in the Civil Rights era. This is a disturbing examination of the consequences of religion and racial injustice. 10:00-11:30am
- No-No Boy by John Okada, ISBN 9780295994048, a 1947 Asian-American novel of a Japanese-American man returning to Seattle after doing time in prison for not joining the army. We will explore themes of isolation, identity, and patriotism. 1:30-3:00pm
